NoBlog Number 18: Jim Lovetoy Gawks at the Transfer Madness

14th January 2010

Media personality Jim Lovetoy writes exclusively for The Football Ramble. “This is no blog, it’s a column. It’s credible. Proper journalism that has an influence...”
I look forward to January every year, not only because it’s cold enough for me to wear at least two of my cool cashmere scarves, but also because it means silly season is officially underway. I’m talking, of course, about the transfer window. Every year some ludicrous transfer takes place and this year has been no different with Sol Campbell rejoining Arsenal for at least the rest of the season. What is Venger thinking? My guess is that he’s lost the plot once and for all and thinks that signing one experienced 35 year old is like getting three 12 year old wonderkids. Campbell apparently played 45 minutes against West Ham for the reserves, except this time he didn’t leave at half time, disappear and decide to become an actor. It’s ironic that these two significant games have come against West Ham as their fans have never forgiven him for joining bitter local rivals Arsenal all that time ago. It’s undoubtedly a good move for him. With Man United and Liverpool already whimpering out of the FA Cup at the first hilarious opportunity and Arsenal’s entire squad being injury prone the cup could represent his last chance to score a significant header that isn’t disallowed. Bad luck Sol, JT already has one hand on the cup! The other one is on the Premier League trophy and the Champions League is dangling from his mouth!
That crazy transfer is just the tip of the ice berg, apparently David James is off to Stoke. Is dropping down a division really going to help his England chances? Joe Hart has been linked with a move to Man City when they already have Shay Given. It’s a crazy move for all involved. Liverpool have only signed Maxi Rodriguez when it’s clear to everyone but Benitez that they need an entire new team.
On the subject of Liverpool their current situation is absolutely staggering, their 3-2 defeat to Reading over two legs shows that they wouldn’t even cut it in The Old First Division. As a Waitrose shopper I have a bit of a soft spot for Reading and it was nice to see a good old fashioned giant killing. The rumours say that Liverpool can’t afford to sack Rafa the Faffer and that they’ll also need to sell Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres to stay afloat. Should this happen then the only Championship they’ll be competing for will be The Championship! I’m sure this will irk Liverpool fans and I’ll get loads of high pitched emails saying that they’re too big a club to ever be relegated, and while it’s true that they’ve won a lot of things in the past it doesn’t matter how big you are and how much you’ve won, you can still go down. Look at Newcastle!
Chelsea have been suspiciously quiet and I can’t help but think that Ancelloti has something up his sleeve now that we’re allowed to sign players again having been banned from doing so since the summer for some reason. With the influence I have I imagine that at some stage in my career I’ll wind up on the Chelsea board and were I already sat there I’d go after Sergio Kunaguero (he’s Maradona’s son after all!), Frankc Ribery, everyone’s always raving about him so he must be good, and...Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres! Before you Liverpool fans email me again just remember that it’s not my fault you can’t afford your own players! Chelsea, Chelsea!

Who do you want to see your club sign in the transfer window? What’s the best bit of business we’re likely to see? What the hell do Liverpool do now?

I thought Joe Hart was on loan from Man City at Birmingham? It s hard to keep track of Man City´s dealings these days. Liverpool should sell up, shut up and start producing bands instead of football teams again :)
